We believe that every story—no matter how painful—can be the beginning of deep and transformative change. That’s how the HOPE Project was born: in honor of a young pilot whale whose tragic experience awakened the urgent need to fight for a better future for our oceans.

It all happened in the southwest of Tenerife, within the Teno- Rasca Special Area of Conservation, a natural sanctuary where marine life thrives in its wildest and most authentic form. HOPE suffered a devastating accident when her tail fin was severed by a boat propeller. She was found floating at the surface, unable to swim and emitting heartbreaking cries of pain. Even more moving was the presence of her family, who stayed by her side, refusing to leave her.

With no possible recovery, HOPE’s case led to the first euthanasia ever carried out on a wild cetacean—a difficult but necessary decision to prevent further suffering and agony.

This heartbreaking event marked a turning point. Her story became the catalyst for the HOPE Project, created in her memory and as a lasting commitment to drive meaningful change in how we interact with marine life. Our mission focuses on research, education, and the implementation of sustainable and respectful practices that ensure the survival and well-being of ocean species.

Today, as we remember HOPE, we move forward with a sense of purpose—toward a future where every effort helps build a safer, healthier ocean. A future rooted in community, awareness, and hope.
